At least 10 people killed in sectarian violence in CAR capital

BANGUI, Central African Republic, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- At least 10 people were killed in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, as French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian began a tour of the region.

Human rights activists said 10 people were killed Sunday -- including one person attacked in front of a foreign journalist -- in sectarian confrontations throughout the capital, the Washington Post reported Monday.

The body of the man who was attacked in front of the foreign journalist, a Post reporter, was dumped outside a Red Cross office across from the base where Burundian peacekeepers were stationed.

The Post reported Christians killed Muslims and Muslims killed Christians while shops and homes were looted. Bodies were set on fire in the street in front of peacekeepers, some of whom tried to stop the violence while others did not, the Post said.

Le Drian was in Chad Sunday afternoon to meet President Idriss Deby to discuss the situation in the Central African Republic and the French presence in the Sahel region to fight with African countries against Islamic insurgent groups, Radio France Internationale reported.

From Chad, Le Drian will travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet President Denis Sasso Nguesso, a mediator in the CAR crisis, before traveling to Bangui Wednesday.
