Israeli soldier killed by friendly fire at Israel-Gaza border

GAZA, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Friendly fire was blamed for the death Tuesday of an Israeli army officer killed near a security fence between Israel and northern Gaza, officials said.

An Israeli military representative said preliminary findings indicated Capt. Tal Nachman, 21, of Nes Tziona, was shot and killed by another Israeli force in the area, Haaretz reported.

The spokesman said Nachman was killed when a Givati Brigade soldier shot at what appeared to be suspicious movement.

Nachman's father told Army Radio that Tuesday was supposed to be his son's last day on the job, and he was being transferred to the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps as training company commander.

"My son was killed by fire of our own forces out of foolishness," the father said.

Circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation.
