MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A French man is in police custody after posting a video on YouTube showing him throwing a cat against a brick wall, officials said.

The matter was brought to police attention after about 40,000 people signed a petition sent to the nation's justice and interior ministers, demanding the man in the video be prosecuted, TheLocal.fr reported Saturday.

In the video, which has since been removed from the site, the man is seen hurling the feline against the outside wall of an apartment building in Marseille. The cat meows loudly after falling to the ground several feet away.

Police said the 24-year-old suspect, who was not identified, faces as much as two years in prison and a fine of $40,500.
