RAMALLAH, West Bank, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Israeli forces shot to death a 20-year-old Palestinian who allegedly opened fire on the troops in the West Bank, Israeli military officials said.

Mohammed Mahmoud Mubarak of the al-Jalzoun refugee camp was shot to death near Highway 465 north of Ramallah, resulting in the roadway being closed in both directions, Arutz Sheva reported Wednesday.

The Palestinian News Network said Israeli forces prevented an ambulance from reaching the man's body after declaring the area a closed military zone.

"A Palestinian terrorist opened fire at an [army] post near Ofra," a statement from the Israeli army said. "The soldiers responded immediately in order to eliminate the imminent threat to their lives and fired towards the terrorist, identifying a hit."
