FLORENCE, Italy, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The retrial of a U.S. college student and her Italian ex-boyfriend in the slaying of her British roommate is nearing completion in Italy, prosecutors said.
A ruling could come as early as Thursday in the latest iteration of the case against Amanda Knox of Seattle and her former lover Raffaele Sollecito in the 2007 stabbing death of Knox's British roommate, Meredith Kercher, during a study-abroad program in Perugia, Italy, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Tuesday.
The two were initially convicted and Knox served more than four years in prison before an appeals court ordered a new trial over an evidentiary dispute. Knox was released from prison and returned to the United States. She has not attended the most recent trial.
Prosecutors have offered a series of theories on Kercher's death, including a sex game gone awry, a dispute over a love triangle and a fight over cleanliness in the apartment.
Another man, Rudy Guede, has been convicted and is serving a 16-year prison sentence for the crime, though prosecutors contend Guede did not act alone in killing Kercher.
