26 migrants on hunger strike at holding facility in Rome

Jan. 27, 2014 at 2:46 PM

ROME, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Half of 26 migrants on a hunger strike Monday over conditions at a Rome holding center where they are detained have sewn their mouths shut, authorities said.

Similar hunger strikes were staged at the Ponte Galeria Center for Identification and Expulsion in December after authorities cleared out a holding facility on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

A medical staff has been monitoring the migrants on hunger strike around the clock, CIE Director Vincenzo Lutrelli told the Italian news agency ANSA.
