ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was in stable condition Saturday after surgery following a stroke, officials say.

The 66-year-old ruler's illness was announced by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, the state news agency WAM reported.

Khalifa suffered the stroke Friday morning.

He became president of the UAE upon the death of his father, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in November 2004.
