CAIRO, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Five Egyptian policemen were killed and two others injured Thursday in a drive-by shooting at a checkpoint in Beni Suef governorate, officials said.

"Masked gunmen on two motorcycles opened fire ... on the forces at the checkpoint," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Violence by militants supporting former President Mohamed Morsi has increased outside Cairo in recent weeks, spreading to populated areas in the Sinai Peninsula, Ahram Online reported.
