British man ordered out of Uganda over gay sex video

Jan. 22, 2014 at 4:30 PM   |   Comments

KAMPALA, Uganda, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Ugandan court has ruled that a British man facing charges of possessing a video portraying gay sex should be immediately deported back to England.

Judge Hellen Ajio ordered Bernard Randall, 65, to leave the country within 12 hours, the BBC reported Wednesday.

If convicted of possessing the video, Randall could have been jailed for up two years. He will face no charges in the United Kingdom.

Albert Cheptoyek, 30, a Ugandan national who shared a house with Randall, faces charges of committing "acts of gross indecency" that carry a prison term of up to seven years.

The Ugandan government is under international pressure because of recently passed anti-homosexual legislation. The bill would make it a crime not to report gay people or even to talk about homosexuality in a way that did not put in a negative light

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has refused to sign the bill.

Randall's video was discovered after thieves stole his laptop and still images from it appeared in a Ugandan newspaper.
