Israel to stop distributing gas masks following defense assessment

Jan. 19, 2014 at 11:50 AM

JERUSALEM, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Israel will stop distributing gas masks to the public at the end of February, security Cabinet officials said Sunday.

The decision was made after defense officials determined that the likelihood of a chemical attack against Israel had declined substantially, largely due to Syria's decommission of the weapons, Haaretz reported.

Manufacturers will still make the masks, but they will only be used for emergency teams, the prime minister's bureau said in a statement.

The decision will be reviewed at the end of the year after a new defense assessment.
