Ex-senator named as one of 9 suspects in killing of Haitian journalist

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A judge investigating the political assassination of Haiti's most popular journalist is asking that nine individuals be charged in his 2000 killing.

Judge Yvickel Dabresil made the recommendation to an appeals court Friday. The court can formally bring the charges against the nine suspects, including former Sen. Mirlande Liberus, from former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's political party, the Miami Herald reported.

In April 2000, journalist Jean Leopold Dominique and a security guard were shot by unidentified gunmen.

Dominique was a harsh critic of Aristide and corruption within his party.

Liberus, who allegedly received the order to silence Dominique, lives in the United States and has refused to travel to Haiti due to immigration concerns.

Haitian journalist Guyler Delva said he was disappointed that the recommendation didn't name Aristide as a suspect.

"If you have to indict the lady who received the order, how about the one who gave it to her?" Delva said. "There is no logic."

Aristide's spokeswoman Dr. Maryse Narcisse said she could not comment on the recommendation without seeing it, the Herald reported.
