The fire began Thursday at the Newgen Tire Recycling plant in Sherburn-in-Elmet, Yorkshire, the Northern Echo reported. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said firefighters were basically letting the blaze burn itself out.
By Friday afternoon, the blaze was "considerably smaller than it was yesterday, but access to it is very difficult," the agency said in a statement. A spokesman said firefighters created "water curtains" to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings at the facility.
The fire could continue to burn for as long as a week, the spokesman said.
While officials said risk to the public from the fire was low, area residents were advised to stay indoors and keep all windows closed to avoid exposure to the smoke.
