MUMBAI, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A stampede among thousands of mourners for an Indian spiritual leader early Saturday killed at least 18 people and injured 56 others, police said.

The 1:30 a.m. incident occurred when the throngs of mourners gathered in Mumbai to pay their last respects to Dawoodi Bohras Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who died Friday, the Hindustan Times reported.

The dead included two children, the newspaper said.

At least 20 of the injured were treated and released, disaster control officials said.

Police said it was unclear what triggered the stampede.

Burhanuddin, who died after going into cardiac arrest, was 102, the Times said. His funeral was to be held later in the day in south Mumbai.
