Police said a 26-year-old woman was stopped at Heathrow Airport as she prepared to board a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

Counter-terrorism police said she was carrying a "large quantity of cash." They are investigating whether she planned to cross the Turkish border into Syria to join jihadists elements or if the money was intended for others.

The second woman, 27, was arrested several hours later at an address in northwest London.

Police said the women were not related.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said the arrests were based on intelligence operations and were not part of any immediate threat.
