SIRTE, Liberia, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Libyan Deputy Industry Minister Hassan al-Darouei was fatally shot in his hometown of Sirte, officials said.

Unknown gunmen in a vehicle opened fire on al-Darouei's car Saturday evening, shooting the minister several times, CNN reported.

This was the first assassination of a government official in Libya since 2011's Arab Spring, which brought an end to dictator Moammar Gadhafi's 42-year rule, CNN said.
