27 homes destroyed in Australian bush fire

PERTH, Australia, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A bush fire ignited Sunday in Perth Hills, Australia, destroying 27 homes and leading to evacuations, fire officials said.

The fire burned through more than 862 acres of land in Parkerville, Stoneville and Mount Helena, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The Department of Fire and Emergency services said there were no injuries, though some of the more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze have suffered heat exhaustion.

Russell Jones, of the department, urged people to stay away from the area.

"We've had several reports that there are many people moving through the area looking at the damage and it is making our firefighting efforts extremely difficult," he said.

Jones said he hoped a dip in temperatures overnight will aid firefighters in controlling the blaze.

Officials did not report a cause of the fire or the number of evacuations.
