Berlusconi reiterates call for early elections

ROME, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi has again called for early general elections in Italy that coincide with the European elections on May 25.

Berlusconi has been campaigning for early elections since his center-right Forza Italia party withdrew support for a left-right coalition government led by Premier Enrico Letta and his Democratic Party, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

"We are aiming for election day [combining national and European votes] on May 25 and we'll win," Berlusconi told FI officials on Friday.

Although Berlusconi is not allowed to run for office because the Italian Supreme Court upheld a tax-fraud conviction against him in November, he added that he hopes to have the conviction overturned by the European Court of Human Rights and be able to appear on the ballot.
