ROME, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The Costa Concordia cruise ship will removed this summer from the site where it wrecked in 2012, killing at least 30 people, an Italian official said Friday.
Ciivil protection chief Franco Gabrielli said the ship would be moved from the site on the Tuscan coast in June, ANSA reported.
Gabrielli said a decision would be made in March about where to tow the vessel for salvage. About 12 ports in six countries have bid for the job.
The Costa Concordia lay on its side in shallow water for 20 months off Giglio island after it hit a rock in January 2012. It was righted in a complex 24-hour operation in September.
Thirty people were killed in the Costa Concordia accident and two were missing and later presumed dead. The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, is on trial, charged with multiple counts of manslaughter and dereliction of duty.
