Woman spared prison for aiding Real IRA group

BELFAST, Northern Ireland, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A woman who did time 40 years ago for bombing London's famed Old Bailey was spared prison Tuesday for aiding the Northern Ireland killers of British soldiers.

Marian McGlinchey, 59, admitted last year that she provided a Real IRA group with a cellphone and assisted a Real IRA member who read a public statement calling for violence against the police. A Belfast Crown Court judge imposed a 12-month sentence Tuesday but then suspended it for three years, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

The judge said he was concerned about McGlinchey's health and also motivated by the period of time she spent in jail after being arrested for breaching the conditions of her release for the Old Bailey bombing.

McGlinchey, a lifelong republican, was sentenced to life in prison in 1973 and released after seven years. At the time of her 2011 arrest, she was secretary of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement.

She acknowledged providing a cell phone to the group who, in 2009, killed two British soldiers at a barracks in Northern Ireland shortly before they were to deploy to Afghanistan.
