KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A NATO soldier was killed in a suicide bomb attack on an Afghan-NATO base in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province and two bombs went off in Kabul, officials say.

One bomb in the capital targeted a police station and the other a coalition military convoy. Neither resulted in casualties.

At least five insurgents were killed as they attempted to storm the base in the province's Ghani Khail district, Voice of America reported. The Los Angeles Times said five insurgents were killed but Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal, a spokesman for the provincial security command, said six Taliban fighters were killed when the vehicle in which they were riding exploded, Khaama Press reported.

Mashraqiwal said the militants had attempted to drive into the base, but blew up the vehicle outside it after security forces recognized them.

Citing Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial governor, the Times said an insurgent detonated a car filled with explosives at the entrance of the base. Four other militants who attempted to storm the base were killed in a 40-minute firefight with Afghan and ISAF forces.

Mashraqiwal said no civilians were killed or injured by the blast. No Afghan forces were reported killed.

The nationality of the NATO soldier was not identified.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed Afghan and ISAF forces received heavy casualties during the attack.

Three Afghan police officers were killed elsewhere in Nangarhar province Saturday when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the Times said.

In a separate incident Friday evening, at least two Taliban militants were killed and another injured during an attack on police in Kunar province.

Provincial security chief Abdul Habib Syed Khel said the militants were killed when a missile went off during the attack.
