Morsi, 130 others, to stand trial in Egypt for escaping prison

CAIRO, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and 130 others are set to stand trial Jan. 28 on charges of escaping prison, a judicial source told Awat Masriya.

Morsi allegedly escaped from prison in collaboration with the Hamas in 2011, in the beginning days of the uprising that ousted former leader Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Lebanese Hezbollah are now accused of helping thousands of Islamist fundamentalists escape.

Morsi has claimed that local residents helped him escape prison, Aswat Masriya said.

Morsi is already at trial on charges of killing demonstrators who were protesting outside the Ittihadiya presidential palace in December 2012.

The second portion of the trial is set to begin Jan. 8.
