National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said police conducted Tuesday's raid based on information given by an associate of the alleged terrorists suspected in a bombing of an orphanage in West Java in September, Antara reported Wednesday.
The suspects were also thought to be responsible for shooting four police officers in South Tangerang during the summer, a police source told the Jakarta Globe. Three of the officers died.
Police also suspect the group was behind several other bombings and a recent bank robbery, the Globe said. The group also has ties to other terrorist cells, including ones led by Abu Roban, who died in a May raid in Central Java.
Police said a man known as Hidayat was shot and killed on a street after he resisted arrest, the Globe said.
"We suspect that [Hidayat] was the leader," a National Police source told the Globe Wednesday. "After tackling [Hidayat], we besieged the house ... and we exchanged gunfire for nine hours."
It was not immediately known if anyone escaped.
