Canadian hockey mom dies of beating injuries inflicted during robbery

Dec. 31, 2013 at 6:53 PM   |   Comments

SURREY, British Columbia, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A Canadian hockey mom has died after being beaten during an apparent botched holdup outside an ice arena, Surrey police said Tuesday.

Julie Paskall, 53, a volunteer timekeeper for her son's hockey team, was assaulted Sunday night in a parking lot while waiting to pick up her son. She had been on life support since the attack.

"The motive for this unprovoked attack remains robbery" with police "continuing to work toward finding out who is responsible," Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said in a statement.

Police also were trying to determine if a Dec. 16 attack in which a 22-year-old woman was injured at a nearby Newton bus loop was related, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

No suspect descriptions had been issued by police in either case, the CBC said.
