LESOZAVODSK, Russia, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Authorities in Russia's Far East said they have detained a teenager who faked his own kidnapping to get a ransom of almost $4,000 from his mother.

The mother reported her 17-year-old son missing to police in the city of Lesozavodsk and said she found a note that said her son would lose his hand if she didn't pay a ransom, RIA Novosti reported.

Police stated searching for the teen and found him sitting at a friend's home.

"The teenager said that he decided to cheat his mother out of her money. He was taken to a police station for an interview," a police spokesman said.

The teen has run away from home on a number of occasions and is known for his anti-social behavior, authorities said.
