Syrian rebels say 21 killed in air raid on Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Syrian rebels said a government air strike Saturday killed at least 21 people in the embattled city of Aleppo.

The raid targeted a crowded market and left several people injured along with the fatalities.

A series of airstrikes that began two weeks ago have left about 400 people dead in Aleppo. Human rights groups have accused the regime of President Bashar Assad of indiscriminate targeting of civilians and the use of so-called barrel bombs, which are packed with shrapnel.

The bombings have threatened to scuttle upcoming peace negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The BBC said the opposition National Coalition announced this week it will boycott next month's talks unless the airstrikes were halted.
