Iranian bill would hike uranium enrichment to 60 percent

TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Some 100 Iranian lawmakers say they signed a legislative proposal Wednesday that would require the government to enrich uranium to 60 percent purity.

The bill was presented to the Presiding Board of the parliament for consideration, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The bill's 60-percent level is well beyond the 20 percent purity at which most experts say nuclear weapons could be produced.

If approved, the bill would require Iran to raise the level of uranium enrichment to 60 percent "to provide the fuel needs of Iranian vessels' engines," said Seyed Mehdi Moussavinejad, a member of the parliament's energy commission.

Similar bill were presented of other legislators during the past year, but they were rejected or delayed by the Presiding Board.
