Col. Igor Yegorov, a spokesman for the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, said the RS-24 Yars missile hit targets in Kamchatka in far eastern Russia, ITAR-Tass reported.
"The main purpose of the launch was to test the efficiency, reliability, safety, flight and accuracy characteristics of the missile system under a realistic combat mission scenario," Yegorov said.
One missile division is expected to be equipped with the new system in 2014, he said. Eventually, the RS-24 Yars will form the basis of fixed land-based solid-fuel ICBMs in Russia's nuclear arsenal.
