Dec. 24, 2013 at 1:29 PM

MUMBAI, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- An Indian woman had her tongue bitten off by a jilted lover moments before she was to marry another man, police said.

Sukanta Swain, 35, of Jilibha village, was with family purchasing last-minute items when she was accosted by a man police did not identify who forcibly kissed her and bit off a portion of her tongue. The man then tried to kidnap Swain but onlookers overpowered the man and he was restrained until police arrived and took him into custody, Into-Asian News Service reported Tuesday.

Doctors performed a minor surgery on the woman to reattach her tongue and the wedding went on as scheduled.

Charges for the suspect, who is already married and has two children, were not reported.
