Homicide investigators in Vancouver announced Karim Meskine's death by Twitter late Friday, the Vancouver Sun reported.
A 16-year-old had been charged with aggravated assault, a charge that islikely to be upgraded to murder.
Meskine was found unconscious Tuesday night near a rapid transit station in New Westminster, British Columbia. Investigators said the assault probably began as an attempted robbery, CTV reported.
A family friend said relatives and friends gathered at Meskine's bedside before the machines that had been keeping him alive were disconnected.
"No father should be put -- no family -- nobody should be put in that situation in life," Lewis Oladuntoye told CTV Saturday. "I witnessed that yesterday."
Oladuntoye described Meskine as "very quiet, simple, easy-going, not flashy."
