Ukraine to free protesters detained in pro-EU demonstrations

LIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Ukrainian lawmakers have voted to free all protesters arrested in recent pro-European Union demonstrations, officials say.

Some 339 members of parliament out of 367 present voted in favor of the amnesty bill, which had been introduced by members of opposition parties, the Russian RIA Novosti news service reported Friday.

The bill's passage on Thursday means no new charges will be brought against activists upset by President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to reject economic ties with the EU in favor of joining the Russian-led Customs Union.

Protesters already convicted will have their convictions annulled.

The demonstrations have seen thousands of protesters filling the streets of Kiev and elsewhere to call for dissolution of the government and early elections.
