Couple charged for lying about stolen Christmas gifts

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A couple from Mississauga, Ontario, have been accused of making up a story about having their Christmas gifts stolen, officials said.

The couple, a 37-year-old man and 47-year-old woman, have been charged with public mischief for falsely telling police their Christmas gifts were stolen during a road accident, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

On Monday, the pair showed up to report the incident, telling police ice fell from the back of a truck, causing the rear window of their vehicle to break.

Then, the couple told police, a bag of Christmas gifts fell out of the window and was stolen by "unknown parties."

While investigating the couple, police determined the couple had fabricated the story.

Constable George Tudos told CBC News the man's story "didn't add up."
