Tribunal finds restaurant owners forced Muslim workers to eat pork

TORONTO, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The owners of a Toronto restaurant have been ordered to pay damages to three former Muslim employees who said they were ordered to eat pork.

The Human Rights Tribunal set damages at $100,000 Canadian ($94,000 U.S.), the Toronto Star reported Tuesday. Paul and Danielle Bigue, who own Le Papillon on the Park in Toronto's Leslieville neighborhood, were also ordered to take human rights training and post the Human Rights Code in their kitchen.

Their lawyer said they plan to appeal.

Abdul Malik, Mohammed Islam and Arif Hossain, all from Bangladesh, filed complaints with the commission in 2011. Two of the men said they were ordered to taste pork dishes with one saying the order came when he was fasting for Ramadan.

The three also said the Bigues made fun of them when they talked in their native language and that Danielle Bigue talked about wanting to have an entirely "white" staff. Malik and Hossain were eventually fired, and Islam said he resigned under pressure.
