Two injured in U.S. Navy helicopter crash in Japan

YOKOSUKA, Japan, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A U.S. Navy Knighthawk helicopter crashed near the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan Monday, injuring two crew members, military officials said.

The injuries were not life-threatening, a Miura fire department spokesman said.

The aircraft, which carried four crew members, belonged to the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, the Stars and Stripes reported.

The helicopter's crew sent out a distress signal at 3:31 p.m. local time shortly before crashing in an empty area of reclaimed land about 10 miles southwest of the Yokosuka base, a Navy spokesman said.
