WANNING CITY, China, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Heavy rains hitting southern China's Hainan province have prompted the evacuation of 150,000 people in the region, officials said.

From Friday through Sunday, Wanning City has been inundated by about 20 inches of rain, with other parts of the province receiving an average of about 8 inches, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

A total of 80,000 residents of Wanning City have been evacuated to safer areas, and another 60,000 people have been evacuated from other parts of the province.

The Hainan Meteorological Service said the rain will likely last through Monday, which may make rescue work difficult and cause flooding and landslides.
