Worker dies after fall at World Cup stadium site

MANAUS, Brazil, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A worker died after a fall at the site of the 2014 World Cup stadium being built in Brazil, officials at a construction company said.

The worker, a 22-year-old man, fell 115 feet while working on the stadium's roof in Manaus, Brazil. A cable broke causing the fall. It is the latest of several deaths at new World Cup stadium sites, resulting in work that has fallen behind schedule, the BBC reported.

FIFA has set a deadline of work to be completed by year's end at all stadiums. Construction crews are working around the clock at many to meet the deadline. The first game is scheduled to be played at the stadium June 14, a pool match between Italy and England, ESPN reported.

The construction company said in a statement workers and supervisors remain committed to safety.

"We reiterate the commitment to the safety of all employees and that an internal investigation is being carried out into the causes of the accident," construction company Andrade Gutierrez said. "Legal measures are being taken in conjunction with the relevant bodies."
