Italian mob boss caught in Netherlands

ROME, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A member of Italy's most powerful mafia family who was convicted in absentia of homicide was captured on the run in the Netherlands, officials said.

Francesco Nirta was a boss in the 'Ndrangheta, the Italian crime outfit officials said is a major player in the European cocaine trade. Nirta was convicted in 2011 of murder and sentenced to life in prison for the vendetta killing of a member of a rival crime syndicate, ANSA news agency reported.

Nirta has been extradited back to Italy to serve out his prison term, officials said.
