MANILA, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The death toll from Typhoon Haiyan, which tore through portions of the Philippines in early November, topped 6,000 as of early Friday, federal officials said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said number of fatalities rose to 6,009, with another 27,022 people injured and 1,779 missing.
Haiyan, called Yolanda in the Philippines, affected 3,424,190 families -- 16,076,360 people -- in 12,122 villages in 44 provinces and displaced 3,927,827 people, the government agency said.
The agency report indicated 101,646 people were living in 383 evacuation centers.
Haiyan destroyed 550,904 houses and damaged 588,827 others, the report indicated.
Damage caused by the storm was estimated at 35.5 billion Philippine pesos (about $805 million), nearly equally divided between damage to infrastructure and agriculture, the agency said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council report said 35,417 personnel from a variety of agencies, 1,351 vehicles, 118 sea vessels and 163 aircraft were still deployed to strategic areas for response and medical operations.
The superstorm bore through Visayas and parts of southern Luzon islands Nov. 8.
