RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A Saudi Arabian court sentenced a jihadist linked to al-Qaida to 16 years in prison and 40 lashes for plotting to kill the grand mufti and other clerics.

A court that specializes in terrorism cases handed down the sentence Tuesday, Middle East Online reported.

The defendant, who has not been named, recruited several people in a plot to assassinate the grand mufti, Sheik Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheik, in addition to other clerics and security officials.

The prisoner has a month to appeal the sentence.

In 2011, Saudi Arabian courts began trying defendants linked to a wave of al-Qaida attacks that occurred between 2003 and 2006.
