Prosecutors: Britain's royals were victims of phone hacking

LONDON, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Tabloid stories revealing Britain's Prince Harry had a "needy" girlfriend bombarding him with calls and texts resulted from hacking phones, prosecutors said.

The stories, published in the now-defunct News of the World, originated from the paper's former royals editor, Clive Goodman, who prosecutors said sent the paper's editor, Andy Coulson, an email in 2005 outlining the situation between Harry and his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Harry, who was in military training at the time and not permitted to access his cellphone until off duty after 10 p.m., was receiving dozens of calls and text messages from Davy each day.

Goodman went on to tell Coulson, "[The royal] family likes her well enough but they're worried that she's incredibly needy, just at the time when Harry needs to be concentrating on himself," the Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

Goodman and Coulson are two of several former employees at the Rupert Murdoch-owned News of the World facing trial for conspiracy to commit wiretapping after the scandal broke reporters and editors at tabloid papers routinely hacked into people's voicemail accounts to obtain inside information.
