NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Violence between rival tribes that killed 15 people Friday in the Kenyan countryside continued Saturday, with gunfire and burning homes, police said.
The fighting has centered on the village of Moyale near the Ethiopian border. After 15 were counted dead Friday police said at least two more died Saturday and more than 800 families have been forced to flee the area.
Dozens of homes were burned in the violence between members of rival ethnic groups, the Borana tribe and combined members of the Burji and Gabra tribes.
Officials pegged the death toll in the weeklong fighting at 27.
Government helicopters circled the village overhead Saturday but that did little to quell the violence, Standard Digital reported Saturday.
Police said they were still plotting how to stop the violence and said the effort was complicated by fighters on both sides engaging in guerrilla tactics. Witnesses accused police of waiting until both sides exhausted their resources before moving in to stop the fighting.
