PARIS, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A group of 20 Romanian police officers have traveled to France to help police investigate crimes allegedly committed by Romanians there, officials said.

The 20 officers, who arrived Monday, join 10 liaison officers who have been stationed in France all year, Radio France Internationale reported.

French officials have said the Roma population in and around Paris has increased, and the number of Romanians arrested in the city of Paris increased by 78 percent in 2011.

Officials said the Romanian police patrol areas in their home country's uniform and speak to Romanians in their own language, not French, as a means of gathering information about potential criminal activity.
