Roadside bomb on Syrian side of border aimed at Israeli patrol

JERUSALEM, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- An explosion that damaged an Israeli military vehicle in the Golan Heights was a roadside bomb planted on the Syrian side of the border, Israeli officials say.

The Israeli military said a preliminary investigation determined the device was detonated on the Syrian side of the border as a military patrol passed by Friday afternoon, the Jerusalem Post reported.

No one was injured by the explosion and the vehicle suffered only minor damage to a rear window.

Conflict between rebels and government forces in Syria has led to increased incidents involving the Israeli military. An Israeli patrol returned fire from a Syrian sniper Dec. 1, with sources telling the Post the soldiers were unsure whether they had hit the sniper.

The same day, a mortar shell fired from Syria exploded near Majdal Shams, a Druse village in Israel. No injuries were reported.

Syrian government troops have been attempting to drive rebels out of the villages they hold, the Post said. In a continuing pattern, government forces assemble near a village, civilians flee, the two sides fight and the civilians return.
