MOSCOW, Dec. 6 (UPI) --
Five suspected militants have been killed by law enforcement officers in the Russian republic of Dagestan, Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee says.
The committee said the suspects were members of "the Khasavyurt gang" who had shot at police officers the day before, RIA Novosti reported Friday.
Police said the militants had been involved in extortion and attempts to assassinate police officers.
The North Caucasus republic has been the epicenter of an Islamist insurgency in recent years.
