NEW DELHI, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Authorities in southern India's Karnataka state say a tiger suspected of killing as many as four villagers has been captured.

The tiger was shot with a tranquilizer and put in a cage, local official C. Srinivasan told the BBC Thursday.

Angry locals have vandalized a forest department office and set fire to two jeeps over the length of time it took to capture the tiger. The families of the dead have demanded compensation from the department.

The BBC said that humans living near reserves where tigers live often leads to competition between the two for resources, which often results in direct contact.
