MENIN, Belgium, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Two people died and seven were injured Tuesday when scores of vehicles crashed in heavy fog on the A19 Motorway near Menin, Belgium, reported.

Motorists said they suddenly "drove into a thick grey wall" of fog with zero visibility, which caused at least 30 to 50 vehicles to pile up on the motorway that connects Kortrijk to Ieper.

VRT national public radio reported as many as 80 vehicles were involved in two pile-ups. There were also single accidents in the vicinity.

The motorway was closed in both directions as medical crews gave first aid to the injured.
