Three killed in shootings in Thailand protests

BANGKOK, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Anti-government protests in Thailand turned deadly Sunday with three people killed in shootings between rival political camps, officials said.

The increased violence led to more than 110 people being injured Sunday in Bangkok as about 30,000 people rallied in eight key locations around the capital, The New York Times reported. Protesters were met by riot police water cannons and tear gas.

Sunday's violence marked the eighth consecutive day of demonstrations calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Shinawatra's opponents contend she is in cahoots with her brother, exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and want her replaced with a "people's council," the BBC said.

Attempts at reconciliation Sunday appeared to have failed, The New York Times reported. Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban met with Yingluck, but there was no agreement.

Some protesters were able to enter some Bangkok television stations Sunday and broadcast a call for a general strike on Monday. Police said the marchers were driven back from the Government House complex where Shinawatra's office is located.

Shinawatra was last seen Sunday at a police station; however, she was evacuated to an undisclosed location.
