Woman found guilty of infanticide for throwing babies in garbage bins

CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Canada judge found Meredith Borowiec guilty of infanticide for throwing two of her newborn babies in garbage bins in 2008 and 2009.

She faced two charges of second-degree murder, the Calgary Sun reported, but the judge said infanticide was a proper conviction due to her mental state at the time.

"The Crown has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that when the accused caused their deaths her mind was not disturbed from the effects of giving birth," Justice Peter McIntyre said.

The conviction carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The bodies of the two newborns were never found, and the case was entirely based on Borowiec's confession to police.

Borowiec, 32, was arrested after a third newborn was found alive in a trash bin near her Calgary apartment.

She still faces an attempted murder charge in relation to that incident, the Sun reported.
