TATU, Nigeria, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Unknown gunmen attacked four Nigerian villages in Plateau state, killing at least 37 people and wounding 10 others, local authorities said.
The suspects began attacking the villages of Tatu, Rawuru, Bok and Dorang early Tuesday, the Nigerian newspaper Leadership reported.
Gunmen shot sporadically at buildings and stormed the houses of residents, killing and wounding the occupants.
Most of the victims were children, pregnant women and older residents, the newspaper said.
Pam Gyang Tsok, the head of village Tatu, said he started hearing gunshots at 1 a.m.
"I then rushed out of my home to the direction of the gunshots and saw the corpses of our fellow villagers who were murdered in cold blood by our attackers littering everywhere. Our village was under siege for more than 30 minutes," he said.
The gunmen set fire to more than 40 houses before fleeing the villages, the newspaper reported.
