French teenager claims anti-cancer vaccine made her seriously ill

PARIS, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A French teenager sued the maker of Gardasil, alleging she was made seriously ill by the vaccine designed to prevent cervical cancer.

Marie-Oceane Bourguignon alleges she has had severe side effects from two injections of the drug she received in 2010, Radio France Internationale reported Monday.

Bourguignon has suffered from either a nervous system disease or multiple sclerosis since February 2011.

Three other women have announced they will sue Sanofi Pasteur, which sells the vaccine in Europe for alleged side effects.

Gardasil is manufactured by Merck.

There is no evidence linking the drug to serious autoimmune medical conditions, said Danial Floret, who heads the national committee that oversees vaccinations.

Some 2.3 million French teenagers are to receive the vaccination each year, proponents say.
