Avalanche in Japan kills 7, authorities search for missing climbers

TATEYAMA, Japan, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- An avalanche killed seven people on Mount Masago in the Toyama Prefecture of Japan, police said, and authorities are searching for missing climbers.

Four men and three women who climbing and skiing were killed Saturday, Jiji Press reported.

They were taken to the hospital and confirmed dead, authorities said.

Police are searching for other missing climbers who were caught in the avalanche, which occurred at 11 a.m.

The avalanche was 98 feet wide and 1,968 feet wide.
